Screencasting & Video Editing

Overview

I completed this project completed this project over the course of three weeks in pursuit of Dr. Kim Sydow Campbell’s Digital Literacies graduate course. We were tasked with creating a procedural quick start guide video tutorial to help users complete a task.

Goals

This assignment focused on helping users learn a software or web-based service. I chose a quick start guide using the content management system, oXygen XML. The video had to include the following elements:

  • Procedural information (rather than conceptual)
  • Information to help users complete tasks with the product
  • Visual markers
  • Audio narration and background music

My goal was to create a video tutorial helping users add topics and brief descriptions to a project in

oXygen XML.

Software Used

Camtasia

Approach

Planning

I started by creating a script and storyboard (linked below) to outline the contents

of the video.

I used a minimalist approach to help the user begin their task immediately and minimize passive activity.

Recording

Following the outline from the storyboard, I used Camtasia to screen record the steps to complete the task (e.g., how to add topics and brief descriptions in oXygen XML). I then recorded audio of my voice reading the script. Using elements within Camtasia, I was able to speed up clips, add transitions and background music, and modulate the audio within the video. The screenshot to the right shows the process of creating the video with Camtasia.

Outcome

The resulting video (shown below) showcases my skill in planning, recording, and editing videos with Camtasia.

The tutorial provides procedural information, visual markers, audio narration, and background music to help users complete their task.
